Everything you need to know about how ProLan lanolin protection works, and how it's used, applied and removed.

How do ProLan products work?

ProLan products are designed to provide effective protection for a wide range of materials without the use of harmful chemicals. The product penetrates deep into the surface and forms a flexible, hydrophobic protective layer that effectively shields against external influences.

The protective layer blocks oxygen and moisture from reaching the surface (for example, metal parts), effectively helping to prevent corrosion. Thanks to its excellent penetration, ProLan can also slow down corrosion processes that have already begun.

Compared to conventional protective agents such as greases, bitumen coatings or oils, ProLan stands out for its excellent durability. The protective layer is not washed off by rain, seawater or common cleaning agents. It also adheres exceptionally well to surfaces under heavy mechanical stress, temperature fluctuations and exposure to moisture, remaining in place even under demanding industrial conditions.

On which surfaces can ProLan be used?

ProLan is suitable for protecting a wide range of materials, including:

  • steel
  • aluminum
  • galvanized surfaces

ProLan provides effective protection against corrosion, moisture, various deposits and weather influences, serving as the final protective layer.

Due to its special composition, it is not recommended to apply paints, adhesives or other finishing coatings onto the protected surface, as ProLan acts as a stand-alone protective solution.

The versatility of ProLan products is based on their natural composition. The main ingredient is lanolin — a natural substance known for its effectiveness, resistance and wide range of applications. It is thanks to lanolin that ProLan protects, lubricates, penetrates surfaces and insulates so effectively.

Application methods for ProLan products

The surface must be completely dry before application.

After application, during the recommended drying period, the surface must not come into direct contact with water or rain.

ProLan products do not dry completely. They remain slightly tacky and form a durable, flexible protective layer that does not crack or peel.

The higher the lanolin content, the more waxy the protective layer becomes, providing long-lasting hydrophobic and anti-corrosion protection.

It can be applied:

  • with a finger (while wearing protective gloves)
  • with a brush
  • with a spatula
  • with a technical syringe
  • with a cartridge gun

Applying multiple layers of ProLan

It is recommended to apply the next layer after a few minutes, once the previous layer has had enough time to penetrate the surface.

After applying the final layer, the manufacturer's recommended drying times must be observed.

For aerosol versions, the drying time is roughly half that of liquid versions.

If the surface is polished with a dry cotton cloth after application, it is ready for use and no additional drying time is required.

Multi-layer protection systems

Airless application allows for fast and even application of thicker layers.

The manufacturer recommends avoiding overly thick application, as this can lead to sagging and unnecessary product consumption.

For protection requiring corrosion resistance class C4 or C5, it is recommended to apply the product in several thin layers, as this achieves the best effectiveness and durability of protection.

Operating temperature range and flammability

ProLan retains its protective properties within a temperature range of approximately –30 °C to +120 °C.

At low temperatures, lanolin naturally thickens and hardens, which affects only its consistency, not its protective properties.

At higher temperatures, the product becomes more fluid, which improves penetration and makes application easier.

This is a natural characteristic of lanolin-based products and does not affect their anti-corrosion, lubricating or hydrophobic properties.

Flammability

All ProLan products (except Anti-Seize grease) are only flammable before application, i.e. in their liquid state.

Once the protective layer has formed, they are generally no longer easily flammable, as lanolin and the other ingredients do not have pronounced flammable properties.

ProLan currently does not hold the PN-EN 45545 certificate, which sets fire safety requirements for materials used in railway vehicles. If a project requires such certification, it can be obtained by arrangement with the manufacturer.

Removing ProLan products

The following can be used to remove the protective layer:

  • refined kerosene
  • ProNaftalan
  • hot water with a citrus-based detergent, using a pressure washer operating at above 170 bar

If additional layers are applied after a longer period of time, the previous layer does not need to be removed. It is sufficient to clean the surface of dirt before applying a new layer.

Because ProLan's excellent penetration allows it to reach deep into the surface and its micropores, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned before any further painting, lacquering, bonding or other surface treatments, even if the protective layer is no longer visible or palpable.
